James B. Conroy
James B. Conroy's practice is concentrated in the fields of employment law and litigation, commercial litigation, independent investigations, and libel and first amendment issues. He has broad litigation experience in state and federal trial courts, the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination ("MCAD"), the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (“EEOC”), the First Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Massachusetts Appeals Court and has also participated in arbitrations and mediations. He is a member of the United States Supreme Court bar and has authored several Supreme Court briefs. In addition to his litigation practice, Mr. Conroy counsels his clients on employment-related matters and negotiates employment contracts and termination agreements. Corporate and institutional clients also retain him to conduct independent investigations of alleged wrongdoing, including sexual harassment charges. His definitive articles on Defamation in the Workplace: The Law of Massachusetts and Workplace Drug Testing in Massachusetts were published in The Massachusetts Law Review in 1989 and 1998, respectively.
Mr. Conroy earned his law degree, magna cum laude, at the Georgetown University Law Center, where he was an editor of the journal, Law and Policy in International Business. He is a graduate of the University of Connecticut, where he majored in political science. He earned a master's degree in International Affairs at George Washington University.
A former senior partner of the Boston law firm of Nutter, McClennen & Fish, Mr. Conroy was a member of that firm’s litigation department and its labor and employment group and served as its litigation training partner. He is an adjunct professor of law at the Suffolk University Law School and is a member of the Boston Bar Association's sections on Administration of Justice, Labor and Employment, and Litigation.
Before joining the bar, Mr. Conroy pursued a public affairs career in Washington, D.C., where he served, sequentially, as an advocate for public interest groups in the environmental and arms control fields; Press Secretary for Congressman Edward Mezvinsky of Iowa; speech writer for Jerry Wurf, then President of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees ("AFSCME"); Press Secretary for the United States Senate Committee on the Budget and speech writer for its successive chairmen, Senator Edmund Muskie of Maine and Senator Ernest Hollings of South Carolina; and chief of staff for Congressman James Scheuer of New York. During his years in Washington, Mr. Conroy wrote influential speeches delivered to the United States Senate, the National Press Club, the National League of Cities, and many other distinguished audiences, and his work was published in The New York Times, Congressional Quarterly, and other leading periodicals.
From 1971 to 1977, Mr. Conroy served in the United States Navy Reserve in antisubmarine aviation units. He lives with his family in Hingham, Massachusetts, where he has chaired the Town's Advisory Committee, its Task Force on Affordability, and its Government Study Committee and has coached youth basketball, soccer, and baseball teams.
